This week is Legion week. In addition to reflecting on what the Royal Canadian Legion brings to veterans and our communities, we also take an opportunity to tell everyone about the benefits of joining.
We are holding a membership drive this Saturday, 25 Sept, 2021 at the New Hamburg Legion branch. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to meet many of our existing members and to learn more about being a Legion member. Everyone is welcome! You can also renew your Legion membership for 2022.
A Legion membership has many privileges, and also helps support veterans and communities across Canada. You can find more details about Legion membership at https://www.legion.ca/join-us.
It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to properly welcome new branch members. But with COVID restrictions allowing, we held a ceremony this past weekend (15 Aug 2021) to formally welcome 11 new members. The weather was perfect, which made the day all the better. But there was so much more to celebrate!
It was also a thrill to welcome descendants of our first branch president, George Thomas. Here you can read more about George and our charter. Pictured in the gallery above you can see four generations of the Thomas Family, including George Thomas (the photo in the center), Craig Thomas (son), Angelica Thomas (grand daughter), and Craig and Liam Thomas (great-grand sons). It was amazing to welcome this family!
But there was still more to celebrate! Waterloo Oxford high school students Lauren Young and Bethany Austen were presented with awards for Remembrance Day poems they had written last year and submitted for a zone competition. They both read their poems to attendees, which was a somber reminder of sacrifice and our purpose as a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Once again, welcome to all our new members and congratulations to our award winners!
Covid restrictions are starting to lift, and we’ve had a lot of success welcoming back our members and friends to our Saturday Patio openings.
We want to take this to the next step by opening the Branch to indoor comradeship; however we need some volunteers to make this happen. While provincial restrictions allow us to open the branch, there are several rules we need to follow, and we need your support to do so.
Observers to help ensure Covid rules are being followed
Relief on the register
Sanitization of dining area
Sign-in/out for Covid tracing
Help in the kitchen with preparation and cleaning
Help with drive-thru dinners
Until we can follow the rules in place, we cannot open the Branch to indoor activities. Thanks to all those who are already giving their time to support Branch openings. We look forward to seeing everyone more often now that restrictions are lifting.
